Lavonia McCormick, of the Gray's Prairie Community, passed away in her home July 26, 2014. She was born to A.C. and Lillie (Simmons) Lockwood January 24, 1914. She celebrated her 100th birthday in January of this year. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Errett McCormick, and a grandson, Jeffrey Sadler. She graduated from Stubbs High School in 1932. After graduating from high school she took a job caring for Sallie Ann McCormick of Gray's Prairie. At that time they had a grandson who also helped them by the name of Errett McCormick. Lavonia found not only a job but her future husband. She and Errett were married in 1934 and lived in the Gray's Prairie Community throughout their life except for 9 years. She was a homemaker as well as working outside the home. She worked for several years at the Fuller Uniform Factory and retired in 1979 as manager of the Miss Marilyn Dress Factory, both in Kaufman. Lavonia was an avid gardener and loved raising her vegetables, especially tomatoes. She was known to many as the "tomato lady". She was a great cook and loved cooking for her family. Her favorite hobby was playing "trash train", a domino game, with her family and friends. She loved her Lord and faithfully served as treasurer of the Gray's Prairie Missionary Baptist Church for 52 years. She was a loving and wonderful Christian example for her family and friends. Lavonia is survived by daughters: Nancy Stokes and husband, Bobby; Nora Nichols and husband, Willie; and Connie Sadler and husband, Luther; grandchildren: Roland Stokes, Bryan Sadler, Kim Vasquez, Theresa Milligan, Kathy Perry, Amanda Tucker, and Amber Estavane; 12 great grandchildren, and 5 great, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
