To Know Her Was to Love Her", our beautiful Vera Mae Barton passed away peacefully on Friday April 26th 2013, in Wood Village, Oregon. She was 95. Funeral was at Parker-Ashworth in Kaufman, Texas. She was born to Albert & Stella Hassell on Oct. 31, 1917 in Rusk, Texas, along with her twin, and joined what was to be 9 other brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving sibling. She graduated from Maydelle High School in 1936, then obtained her teachers degree in August of 1949 and her masters in August 1957, both from East Texas State in Commerce, Texas, where she became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a lifetime member of the Baptist Church. She married Dalton "Gene" Barton on Dec. 30th, 1941 and had 2 children, Sandra and Carlton. She taught school in Texas, primarily Kaufman, for 20 years. In 1962, she moved to Oregon with her son and taught school in Corvallis School district for another 19 years. Upon her retirement, she made several trips to England to visit friends, became a Master Gardener thru the Oregon State University Extension service and continued her activities in Delta Kappa Gamma until she moved to Gresham, Or. in 2001. She is predeceased by her daughter Sandra Wright, grandson Daniel Countryman and great-granddaughter Dani Countryman, all of Kaufman, Texas. She is survived by her son Carlton (wife Peggy) and three grandchildren, Blaine of Gresham, Or. Todd (wife Siobhan) of Happy Valley, Or., and Desa Lynn of Bend, Or. In Texas, she is survived by grandsons Gene Countryman and Michael Julian (wife Misty), both of Kaufman, Texas; She is also survived by numerous great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
