Ruth Lasater Hellums was born in Cottonwood, Texas on September 7, 1913 to Levi and Martha Tippett Hellums. Ruth passed away in Kaufman, Texas on January 15, 2010. Ruth was raised in Cottonwood and later moved to Dallas for a short time. She moved back to Scurry in 1947 where she lived the rest of her life. Ruth graduated from East Texas State University with a bachelor's degree. She taught school in Peeltown and then taught twenty-nine years in Scurry-Rosser. Ruth was a member of the Cottonwood Baptist Church all her life. She also, was a member of the Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Eastern Star and the Modern Arts and Crafts Club. She married William E. Hellums and he preceded her in death in 1996 and a daughter Betty Ruth Cade also preceded her in death in 1992. Ruth is survived by her son: Gene Hellums and his wife Peggy of Scurry, grandchildren: Julie Moeller, Gary Hellums, Cathleen Farley and Carol Lynn Olson, great-grandchildren: Mandy, Maegan, Morgan, Ashley, Laura and Scott, great-great-granddaughter: Caden and many other relatives and friends.
