NETTIE RAY HALL Nettie Ray Hall was the sixth child born to Nettie Dorroh Ray and Averitt Thomas Ray on November 8, 1915, in Coleman, Texas. The family moved to Temple where she attended public school. Before her senior year in high school her family moved to Breckenridge where she graduated in 1932 as Salutatorian of her class at age 16. She attended Baylor University in Waco graduating Cum Laude in 1936 with a BA degree. Nettie spent about six months as a student in the medical lab at Scott and White Hospital in Temple. She took a job in a ten-bed hospital in Vernon and later left to be a Medical Technology student at Baylor Hospital and was certified as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She worked for Dr. Gordon Maddox in his Dallas clinic. On August 19, 1939, Nettie married Edward Irvin Hall who was beginning his senior year in medical school at Baylor in Dallas. Ed entered the Navy as a Lt. Jr. Grade in March 1942. He was given a medical discharge in 1943. Nettie and Ed then moved to Kaufman with a 3 month old baby girl, a Plymouth car, enough furniture for 3 rooms and $1,000 in savings. Dr. Hall started his practice in the back of Scott's Drug Store. Nettie did his lab work and X-rays when needed. She also occasionally did lab work for Dr. Taylor, the only other doctor in town. After Dr. Bill deFlaming and Dr. Guy Shaw became Ed's partners they used Dr. Shaw's building as their offices and could afford to pay a technician so Nettie only worked whenever a technician was on vacation. After a few years they had enough to hire more technicians. Nettie gave birth to a son on June 4,1945. Nettie was a volunteer at the hospital gift shop, later at the Kaufman County Library and worked many years for Easter Seals. She volunteered to teach chemistry one year when a teacher quit two weeks before school started. She was president of the PTA, Junior Study Club and the Garden Club, taught Sunday school at the Methodist church and was Superintendent of the Children Sunday School as well as working with Women's organizations. Nettie and Ed were charter members of Cedar Creek Country Club where she learned how to play golf and she loved to play bridge. Nettie is survived by her daughter Janette Hall Shrader and son-in-law Phil Shrader, by her son Ray Hall and daughter-in-law, Anita Hall, by six grand children and by seven great grand children.
