On November 27, 1965, he married Suella Dean in Kaufman. John and Suella were blessed with a loving 57 years together. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, especially bird hunting, raising cattle, and taking care of his donkey, Cedrick. Many generations of dear friends and family were blessed each summer by John and Sue's annual 4th of July party, where John began the tradition years ago as the original barbeque "Pitt Boss".
