Thurman Claude Cousins, 89, of Scurry, TX went to be with the Lord on August 1, 2022, at home. Thurman was born on February 1, 1933, to William and Dorothy Cousins in Chickasha, OK. He was the oldest of nine children raised on farms and cotton fields. His parents settled in Scurry in 1947 where he went to school and graduated at Scurry-Rosser high School in 1950. In June of 1950 he joined the Army, during basic training the Korean War started and shortly after finishing basic training he was sent to Korea. He joined the 24th Infantry Division once arriving in Korea and ended the war as part of the 7th Calvary. On returning home he worked as a ranch hand in Scurry. Didn’t take him long to see that wasn’t for him and he rejoined the Army. He was eventually stationed in Fort Sill, OK and bought a house for his wife, Donna Jean, and their 3 children in Lawton, OK. He then, with his family, was moved to West Germany where he was promoted to Sergeant First Class as a part of the 1st Battalion of the 36th field Artillery unit. When the Vietnam War started, he was moved back to Fort Sill. In September 1966 he boarded the ship to Vietnam. When he got to come home after Vietnam, he became Sergeant Major Cousins and stationed at Fort Sill. He took several tours from Fort Sill back to Vietnam. He was transferred to the Arkansas National Guard, then in 1973, he was selected to attend the Army’s Sergeant Major Academy at Fort Bliss, TX, then had a short tour with the Cornell University working with ROTC. He finished his career as a part of the 10th Special Forces in Italy, where he got to travel to Turkey and other countries in civilian clothes supporting nuclear capable sergeant missiles. Finally on August 1, 1975, back at Fort Sill, OK at age 42 and after 25 years on active duty he retired. He became a major in the Texas Criminal System in Huntsville, TX which allowed him to go to college. He earned a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in 3 subjects before taking his final assignment as a member of the Texas State Mounted Patrol retiring after 22 years. He and his family settled back down in Scurry, TX. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and soldier. His parents, William and Dorothy, wife Donna Jean, brothers: Jesse Hill, Jr. and Wendell Cousins; sisters: Gean Murr and Margie Lou Blair preceded him in death. Those left to cherish his memory are children: Carlton Cousins, Bill Cousins and wife Carrie and Salina Cousins; grandchildren: Zachary Cousins, Colby Charles and Carly Cousins; brothers Kenneth Cousins and wife Wanda and James Hill and wife Vicki; sisters: Diana Hill Woody and Belva Harrison; sister-in-law’s: Martha Hill and Tina Cousins; numerous extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
